RYA Dinghy Level 1 is designed for the absolute beginner. Discover how much fun sailing can be. Aims to provide a safe and fun environment to build sailing confidence and introduce the concepts of steering, tacking and gybing.
You will cover the following essential elements to sailing.
Wind awareness and knowledge of spars & rigging, parts of the sail, sail controls and foils.
Can tie figure of eight knot, round turn & two half hitches and secure a rope to a cleat.
Sailing Techniques & Manoeuvres
Practical understanding of the basic principles of the following manoeuvres:
Reaching - sailing across the wind
Stopping - lying-to
Tacking – turning the front of the boat through the wind
Getting out of irons
Sailing upwind, sailing downwind
Gybing - turning the back of the boat through the wind.
Launching & recovery:
Securing a boat on trolley.
Understands the principles of:
Wheeling a trolley clear of other boats & overhead cables
Launching & leaving the shore
Coming ashore & recovery of dinghy
Sailing theory & background:
Aware of other water users.
Basic knowledge of rules of the road - port/starboard, windward boat, overtaking boat, power/sail.
Awareness of onshore & offshore winds. Knows sources of weather information.
Clothing & equipment:
Iimportance of appropriate clothing, footwear and personal buoyancy.
Theory- knows importance of staying with the boat
All course costs include safety equipment, wetsuit and qualified instructors
Do I get a certificate?
The course follows the syllabus of the Royal Yachting Association’s Level 1 award and these will be available presented at the end of the course.
All courses are subject to sufficient numbers and suitable weather conditions and are non-residential. In the case of insufficient numbers being booked you will be notified in the week leading up to the course and offered an alternative date.
